Fashion and the Involvement of Men
The Unforgettable Sixties
The sixties is always remembered for the music, but with the music accompanied the fashions that were sometimes enhanced by musicians with their constant changes of attire on stage. These were ever changing trends that brought color and energy into our lives. Many fashion designers made their name in this era, with their sometimes outrageous designs. It was these fashion designers that made London the fashion capital of the world, prompting tourists of all nationalities to come and visit Carnaby Street. At that time, it was one of the most famous streets on the planet.
The Seventies Scenario
One decade on and the seventies saw many changes with the tight-fitting jackets with narrow shoulders and bell bottom trousers with platform shoes. London still remained influential in the fashion scene, but American, Italian and French designers were making a statement on the stage of the world’s fashion. The ready to wear trend had hit the public and with more casual trends in London and Paris, the Italians went for a more luxurious style which continued to be their trademark. Old military clothing was being worn, colorful sweaters and tweed jackets. The glam rock style was adopted by many rock stars who prompted many of their fans to follow suit.
Back to the Eighties
The eighties saw the French, and Americans get a better hold on the fashion industry with London taking more of a supporting role. Skinny ties were frequently worn and a substantial number of men had a mullet hair cut. Sports wear was becoming more popular for everyday wear, and it was proven to remain this way for some time to come. This resulted in the sports industry experiencing a boom throughout the world, and was enhanced even further, by famous sports stars wearing named sports wear and being sponsored by the manufacturers.
The Nineties – All Cult Trends & Fashion Designers
Changes came to the fashion industry in the nineties with the desire to avidly follow specific trends coming to an end and more individuality coming to the high street.
Simple trends were adopted and the ready made market flourished even more with the names of many retail outlets becoming just as popular as the names of the influential fashion designers of the sixties and seventies. It was the nineties that prompted a number of famous designers to diversify taking advantage of the modern man’s desire, for after shave balm and eau de cologne. With these fashion designer names on these products, it prompted more to follow suit enhancing an already viable perfume industry.
The New Century Nuance or Was It?
As the twenty first century got under way, the fashion industry struggled for some time but began to revert to the influence of the sixties and seventies for inspiration. This saw the rebirth of colorful designs often giving the impression that new ideas were few and far between. However, help was at hand in the form of a number of young up and coming fashion designers which brought new ideas and a breath of fresh air to what was becoming an industry that was getting a little stale. With menswear, the trend towards a more masculine approach was being sought, to overcome the slide towards femininity that had become apparent in this era.
All-in-all the pattern of change that has occurred over the last 50 years has witnessed many fashion icons to become firmly established throughout the world, not only in men’s fashion, but influencing every aspect of our life today: at home and at work.
