How To Give A First Class Keynote Speech
Making a public speech can be terrfiying, in particular if it’s something you have never done before. Keynote speeches can be made anywhere. As a common example, if you are best man at a wedding. Don’t let yourself come out in cold sweats and start quaking in your boots. Here are a few tips on how to make a good keynote speaker.
Be an expert in the topic at hand
Who wants to listen to someone waffle on about something they don’t know about? Being serious, it’s important to feel comfortable about what you are talking about. If you are the best man at a wedding, you should really know all about the groom already. Even if you don’t get on with the wife, getting to know her for a good speech is a fair sacrifice. Again, if you are a business speaker for the day, know what you are talking about. If you are giving a promotional speech on a product, know the product inside out before hand. Try and test the product or service. Use the power of the internet to perform your research. You should find a website detailing the product or service. For generic products or services, why not try Youtube or Wikipedia? If the product is well known, try Wikipedia or even Youtube for further information.
Know your audience
Audience interaction is key. Frankly if you sit up and drone on for an hour, the audience will be bored stiff. It will do nothing for your reputation, and they won’t be listening to what you have to say. Thus don’t be one of those bad speakers. Learn about your audience before the speech. What companies do they work for? Are there any shared interests? Is there anything you can help them with? Get the audience participating and helping you along. Visual aids can work well. Cliched as it may be, what about using Powerpoint? Sometimes it can be a difficult choice to decide whether to allow the audience to participate. It does depend on the type of audience. Try and pick the more confident audience member. Don’t do what some speakers do and pick the nervous members of the audience. We’ve all been there!
Work for the sake of your company
Whether it be for free drinks, or presenting an important speech, work for the employer. If you need to sell to them, make sure you do it as best and non-aggressively as possible. When promoting a product, give it your best shot. If you don’t succeed, you probably won’t get another chance.
Practising equals best preparation
The worse keynote speech will come through lack of preparation. The most skilled keynote speakers will practise over and over again. You can use cue cards if needed. Commit the speech to memory. If you lose your way, don’t fret, use your cue cards. Whoever you have to deliver a speech to, we do wish you the best of luck.
