Times have changed since the pen and paper days and not every goal will be one that you can measure in black and white. For instances a good goal for some it is to attain a higher level of spirituality. How do you put a time limit and measurement on paper for that? This is what can be referred to as a subjective goal.
The key is to take baby steps at first to get the hang of it. Setting short-term goals, that is goals that take only a short period of time to culminate, are the building blocks to ultimately reaching the long-term goals you have set for yourself and your business. If you set up only hard goals you will get frustrated and discouraged all too quickly. Frustration with slow progress is a big killer of dreams. Having easy goals will help you get in the habit of succeeding. Yes, success is a habit. You learn follow through and reward by setting and achieving the easy short-term goals.
Your short-term goals need to be specific in the sense that it leaves no guess room when it comes time to evaluate the success of the goal. You can abbreviate titles and headings but always be as detailed and clear as possible about the steps involved in reaching the goal and the goal itself.
Deadlines are good motivators. Must they be used for all goals? The answer is not really, the subjective goals cannot really be measured by a length of time. But all other goals need a start and end date to keep you pushing forward. Goals cannot start at a vague future point nor should they end sometime in the future. This gives you way too much wiggle room. This leads to procrastination and nothing ever gets done. There are however sometimes certain goals that qualify as ongoing goals. These goals have levels that can be attain but you never quite reach the top. Sort of like leveling up in a video game. Once you have completed phase one you move right into phase two.
