Tips To Help You Master Time Management
No one is always as productive as they want to be, not even people who have perfected their time management abilities. Yet this should not discourage you from working on your own time management abilities. When you improve your ability to manage your time, you will be able to squeeze more into each day. As your efficiency and productivity improve, you also tend to feel more confident and happy with your life. There are ways you can consciously develop your time management abilities, and we will discuss some of them here.
You will never be perfect, so you should start out by accepting this. No matter how good you get at time management, perfection is not humanly possible. People who demand perfection of themselves usually get results that are very imperfect. Life isn’t meant to be perfect. If you are going to effectively manage your time and methodically complete your tasks, you can’t be concerned with perfection. Your time is limited, no matter how good you are at managing it. Nothing goes exactly the way you planned it. So be satisfied with doing the best you can. One of the best ways to manage time more effectively is to be able to step back and look at the big picture.
One simple way to make things easier for yourself is to break down large projects into smaller, more manageable ones. It’s easier to get a handle on a large job when you can work on it one piece at a time. If you are part of a team, it’s also helpful to break down large jobs so you can give each person the task he or she is most qualified to work on. Most people have a tendency to avoid large tasks, procrastinating until the very last minute. Whether we admit it or not, we are likely to avoid large projects that we aren’t sure how to start. When you separate it into smaller jobs, however, the whole thing seems simpler and more workable.
Don’t forget to give yourself rewards! Give yourself an incentive to stay on -or ahead of- schedule by having a treat on the other side. It’s human nature to work more productively when there’s a reward for doing well. Choose a reward that will motivate you to work harder. Anything that makes you feel like working more productively will be helpful. While there is some satisfaction in simply completing a task, having a reward waiting for you gives you a good reason to finish the task. Working all day with no reward in sight can be dreary. You can better endure even difficult tasks when you have something fun to look forward to. Fun is important, and it even makes you work harder.
Time management skills can be acquired by anyone. Just remember, it’s something that takes some patience and commitment. It can be hard to train yourself to be more productive, especially if this is new to you. You have to keep practicing your new skills until they become natural to you. You should expect to run into challenges, but don’t let that stop you. If you stick with it, you will one day feel like a time management expert, and no one will believe it was ever a problem for you.
