What is Your Most Important Need for Personal Growth?
Written by Jimmie Burroughs
The answer given by one reader of Yahoo queries and answers for the question: "What is your best need for personal growth?" " To stop psycho-analyzing everything and just be OK with things the way in which they are..." Is that the answer to something as vital as personal growth? I do not believe so! I think it's very important to be content with what you have materially, but re personal growth, we must always wish to become our absolute best and not to be happy with ourselves as we are. Every person has the capability for personal growth.
I've been involved for a long time in teaching personal growth; teaching plenty of different topics that inspire personal growth. I've come to believe in time the greatest need is first to grasp yourself, or know yourself. Tony Robbins said, "All we need is already inside us." How true, but we must be able to know what's inside.
There are 3 important things about yourself that you need to know:
Your inner self
Your strengths
Your weakness
Knowing your inner self:
It is far easier to know your outer self which you can see and touch. It is simpler to see the improvements that you want to make to your appearance or understand ways to improve your health, but the inner self is the abstract, unsubstantial and so tougher to understand.
The first need is to grasp how we are made; we are definitely a triune being, or put simply made up of 3 separate parts which are body, soul and spirit. The soul also has 3 parts, mind, will and feelings. The soul is the least trusted because it's the product of previous learning, much of which could be wrong; it's the seat of established patterns of behaviour, which also could be wrong. I know you have experienced the need of unlearning something before you might learn it the best way. I play the guitar and I'm learning that the configuration of some of the chords I learned aren't the best, but to change to the better configuration after the 1st methodology is set in my mind and fingers is really difficult. Personal growth requires changes that are not easy.
Learning that we can't allow the soul to be in control is the 1st step in understanding ourselves . Your mind as well as emotions has been influenced by outside forces that are not always in your own interest. So to be controlled by either the mind or the emotions will lead you into making emotional or intellectual decisions that are not the best for your well-being.
That begs the question as to where our best direction comes from . If it's not the mind that we are used to thinking with or the feelings that we feel with, then what else is there? That is where the third part of our existence comes in. Our spirit is the seat of who we actually are and it alone can be trusted to guide us in the correct direction.
The spirit is the essence of our inner self and is best qualified to control what we think or feel and how we make calls. The subsequent question is how then does an individual get in touch with the spirit or inner self? Some claim and teach that it is through meditation. I believe meditation is good if it is applied properly, but getting in touch with your inner self is letting your intuition talk and tell you. Some say let your heart tell you. Our intuition, or our heart, has God's laws of right and wrong stamped upon it. Therefore , it's the heart or intuition that distinguishes right from wrong. It is what reinforces our capability to make right calls.
Some refer to this as the gut feeling. Some say they go by their instinct; others call it intuition. Whatever you choose to call it, it is the inner self. It is hard to outline, but we have it and we are able to develop the skill of listening to it
Discerning you inner strengths :
We all have our differing inner strengths. Some are inclined to be leaders, although leadership is an ability that must be developed. Some are powerful encouragers; some are brave and bold; some have a powerful love for others, and so on. You decide what you are feeling are your best inner strengths because they'll become the foundation of your future personal growth. Do not be daunted if you are unable to immediately identify them [*SCO]. It usually requires time. Also hear others; infrequently they can see your inner strengths better than you.
Knowing your weaknesses:
Without knowing one's weaknesses often ends in trying to do things for which you aren't fitted, which results in failure . Knowing your weaknesses isn't to be an end in itself but a beginning. When you know your weaknesses then you can fortify them thru personal growth. When I was young, I was awfully shy and backward. That was a weakness I had to overcome; I wished to strengthen my ability to be confident and to be outgoing. It took years to fully attain it but do it I did, because I realized its importance.
It could be better to discover our weaknesses because they have been things we've been struggling with all our lives. The strengths might be laying sleeping prepared to come out and be developed. We want to understand both in order to realize the best benefits from personal growth. Both strengths and weaknesses are included in personal growth; fortifying weaknesses and developing strengths.
Conclusion:
Take time to consider yourself. Find a place to be alone, and yes meditate on it. Clear the other thoughts from your consciousness and target just your inner self. Sort out your strengths and your weaknesses.
I might be remiss if I didn't also tell you that my personal best advantage in allowing my spirit to be in control has resulted from having the power of The Lord God's Spirit inside my spirit to steer and fortify me. Anyone that so desires can invite God into their life and have a living ongoing relationship with him. There isn't any better life coach than God!
