Which: Coach VS A Mentor and Why?
Suggestions to decide: Do you need a Coach, or want a Mentor?
As somebody which has spoken facing 1000′s of individuals about the world, as a Personal Development Mentor, translated into 18 languages, I get pleasure from moving folks into action. It never ever fails, in the end of my events, a few of those that attended asks me if I could personally mentor them.
Just before I answer that, allow me to go back and offer you some history that can give you a look into my answer I share with them. My Dad is my ideal teacher, and growing up I learned the art work of “Experience may be the most effective Teacher”! See my Dad would watch as I would do things about the farm, from changing a tire, to feeding the dogs or plowing the fields. Let me clarify.
Do you don’t forget as a kid how you “thought” you were getting away things, and then you were busted by your parents? Well that was my Dad. I don’t know how lots of times I messed something up, then immediately give that “slow look” around and come across Dad standing somewhere giving me the “look”. Now I have to let you know, it wasn’t “the look” of frustration, it was a lot more like, “okay, now how are you going to fix it” kind of look.
So what does this have to do with how to pick a coach vs a mentor? Well here ya go… My Dad didn’t do it for me, many times he didn’t even do it to show me. I used to get so mad, I thought maybe he didn’t think it was important enough to show me. What I have learned now as an adult, is that he was forcing me to THINK, to create a plan in my head, teaching me to think in advance, if this then that, kind of thinking. Well many times, it caused challenges and I have to tell you I got mad on many occasions.
So here are my thoughts on the best way to choose a Coach and the way to pick a Mentor.
Coach
1. Define what skill you want to improve.
2. Discover an individual that has mastered the skill you desire and get them to Coach you.
3. Follow the routine they put you on.
4. Ascertain how lengthy you would like to be taught this new skill.
Mentor
1. Who is an individual with all the unique qualities you would like to have in your life?
2. A person that has the capacity to move person into action.
3. What set of skills would you want to have tremendous success in?
4. Who is strong in the areas of interest you have and has mentored people in the past?
5. Are you ready for a lifetime relationship and can you see yourself doing that?
A Coach will teach you how to do what you want to do, a Mentor will teach you how to do things you did not know you were capable of! So you have to determine which do you want? How do you find out if someone is the right choice for you? You have to ask questions, you have to interview, you have to make a list of things you are looking for.
So how do you interview? Interviewing is a process of finding out if will you get the value needed to invest in the relationship. So you have to be honest about what you are looking for. If the person you are talking to has the experience you are looking for, you’ll know it from the conversation. They will share insights with you that they pick up from the interview conversation with you, they will give you action steps to put into action even if you choose not to use them for your personal training.
A Mentor is a person that can move you into action and hold you accountable, bring out the good results in you that you simply have kept hidden for far too long. A lot like I mentioned earlier, when I believed I was getting away with different things as a kid, my Dad knew. A mentor is the same way, they know when you are carrying out what they asked you to do and when you’re not.
So create your list, determine if are you searching for a coach or a mentor. Here may be the good news. A Mentor could be a coach, but a coach cannot ever be a mentor. You need to establish how hard you would like to be pushed and are you willing to pay the price. My answer to those that want me to mentor them is “Yes, now your 1st job is immediately send me your list of 20 Personal Goals that you want out of life.” As soon as I get them, I will start the process with them. We’ll schedule their Mentor Profits Call. It is sad really, out with the 100′s that have had the courage to ask, only a handful have taken action, and that action has turned into amazing success for them.
So here are some questions for you:
1. Are you happy with what you have?
2. If your growth this year is considerably like last year’s are you currently satisfied?
3. Do you may have a customized road map developed for your talents?
4. Will you hold yourself accountable to have success?
5. Does the believed of tremendous good results scare the hell out you?
If you answered Yes to any of these, you might be looking for a coach.
